Quantum simulation of condensed matter systems

The manipulation of individual ultracold atoms allows to deterministically assemble quantum many-body systems. These systems are ideal model systems for testing basic building blocks from condensed matter physics, for example, the seminal Hubbard model, to which even today no computational solution exists. In near future the new Heidelberg Quantum Assembler will be operating with a system of about 10×10 ultracold atoms, enabling preparation of magnetically ordered states of large ensembles and the realization of systems with strong quantum correlations. The goal of this project will be to devise new diagnostic techniques to unveil essential information about the properties of such complex many-body systems.
